Queen Victoria c u later: The Realities (and myths) of Texting

World-renowned linguist and foremost expert on the English language, Dr. David Crystal, challenges the myths that communication technologies are destroying languages. With results from recent sociology studies on technology use, studious work with old English texts, and thoughts from his own keen observation, Crystal attempts to show that texting has its merits to the development of language.

The myth? Abbreviations have taken over our digital communications.
The reality? Only 10% of text messages are abbreviated! In fact, abbreviation is dissuaded.
The myth? Text messaging thing (and Tweeting thing) with its new abbreviations is destroying the English language.
The reality? You actually need to be an excellent speller to text/abbreviate well!
Crystal puts forth a very convincing argument that’s worth addressing in your English department.
